1.2A stepper driver in 4x4mm package needs no external sense resistor

“It is well suited for constant-current control stepper motor applications including those found in office automation, commercial and industrial equipment. It is also suited for surveillance cameras and projectors,” said Toshiba.

Named TB67S549FTG, its internal constant-current control does not require an external current sense resistor, and the internal charge pump includes its capacitor.

Also integrated is something Toshiba calls ‘advanced dynamic mixed decay that “guarantees efficient PWM current control under all conditions. Up to 32 micro steps can be realised”.

This mixed decay involves monitoring both the current flowing from the power supply to the motor and the current re-circulated from the motor to the power supply for constant current PWM control. Noise blanking is included, which is controlled in various ways depending on factors including motor inductance, operating speed and current – its diagrams take up five pages of the data sheet.

Over-current detection, thermal shut-down, and under-voltage lock-out protect the device, which also has a <1μA sleep mode.

Toshiba has teamed up with Mikroe to create a development board, the Stepper 12 Click (left), supported by a mikroSDK compliant library.
