“Folks, we need to make these chips right here in America to bring down everyday costs and create good jobs,” said US President Joe Biden at the event, “China, Japan, South Korea, European Union — all these places are investing tens of billions of dollars to attract chip manufacturers to their countries, but industry leaders are choosing us, the United States, because they see America’s back and America’s leading the way.”
“The Chinese Communist Party actively lobbied U.S. business against this law:- ‘If you want to do business in our country, don’t do it there’,” recounted Biden
“We’re gonna make sure that companies that take taxpayers’ dollars don’t turn around and make investments in China to undermine our supply chain and national security,” he added.
“Federal investment attracts private investment,” said Biden, “it creates jobs. It creates industries. It demonstrates that we’re all in this together.”
“This is about our economic security. It’s about our national security,” added Biden, “it’s about good paying union jobs you can raise a family on, jobs that show that the industrial Midwest is back,”
“As we saw during the pandemic, when the factories that make these chips shut down, chips shut down. The global economy comes to a halt,” concluded Biden.
“Today we broke ground on a future that every Ohioan can be proud of,” said Representative Tim Ryan of Ohio “this multi-billion-dollar investment is a culmination of an unprecedented collaboration between federal, state, and private sector leaders that will transform Ohio’s economy and provide future generations an opportunity to build a stable middle-class life right here at home.”
Intel CEO Pat Gelsinger said the ceremony marked the end of the Rust Belt and the beginnings of ‘Silicon Heartland’.
The ceremony, on a 1,000 acre site at Licking County outside Columbus, included a gospel choir and the Ohio State University’s marching band (dubbed ‘The Best Damn Band in the Land’).
