After months of leaks and rumors, Nvidia’s RTX 40 Series has officially been announced. Now that we know about Nvidia’s new 4nm Ada Lovelace architecture, upgraded DLSS 3.0 technology, and that the new RTX 40 Series offers a solid 2-4x performance boost compared to the top-end 30 series models, let’s dive into everything there is to know about Nvidia’s latest next-gen graphics cards.
Are you ready for your RTX 3080 Ti and RTX 4090 Ti to get outperformed?
Release Date
Nvidia has confirmed that the top-end model, the RTX 4090, will be available on October 12, 2022. However, there is no official word on when we can expect either variant of the RTX 4080. Although it’s yet to be confirmed, rumors suggest a release date sometime in the first two weeks of November.
Cost
According to leaks, here’s how much the Nvidia RTX 40 Series GPUs will cost when released in a few weeks:
- Nvidia RTX 4080 (12GB) – from $899
- Nvidia RTX 4080 (16GB) – TBD
- Nvidia RTX 4090 – from $1,599
While the RTX 4090 has only jumped in price by $100 when compared to the previous top-end 3090, the RTX 4080 has seen a $200 increase when compared to the RTX 3080. So if you’re used to gaming on a budget and getting mid-range graphics cards, you can expect to pay an extra $200 from Nvidia. However, if you like the top-of-the-line experience, you can expect only a $100 price hike.
All graphics card models will be available from GPU partners like Asus, Gigabyte, MSI, PNY, and Zotac. Nvidia confirmed all three graphics cards will also be available in pre-built PCs by Acer, Alienware, Asus, Dell, HP, Lenovo, and more – however, it’s yet to be determined whether these third-party manufacturers will stick to the recommended retail price (RRP) of the latest Nvidia graphics cards.
Although, even if third-party manufacturers don’t stick to the RRP, Nvidia confirmed it will be manufacturing limited-edition Founders Edition models for both the RTX 4090 and RTX 4080 (16 GB), which should match the recommended retail price even if third-party variants don’t stick to it.
Here are the price ranges for the current RTX 30 Series lineup as a reminder:
Nvidia GeForce RTX 3060 – $329
Nvidia GeForce RTX 3060 Ti – $399
Nvidia GeForce RTX 3070 – $499
Nvidia GeForce RTX 3070 Ti – $599
Nvidia GeForce RTX 3080 – $699
Nvidia GeForce RTX 3080 Ti – $1,199
Nvidia GeForce RTX 3090 – $1499
Nvidia GeForce RTX 3090 Ti – $1999
Nvidia Ada Lovelace architecture
Ada Lovelace is considered by many to be the world’s first computer programmer. So what better name is there for Nvidia’s RTX 40 Series than the codename Ada Lovelace?
The company worked with TSMC to deliver both improved performance and better power efficiency, and implement an impressive 4nm process on the new graphics card collection. This is down even from the launch rumors which were said to be at 5nm.
Some of the top features include:
- 76 billion transistors
- 90 Shader TLOPs via a new streaming multiprocessor
- 200 RT TFLOPs with 2x ray-triangle intersection for better ray-tracing performance
- 1,400 Tensor TFLOPs for improved deep learning capabilities
- New Shader Execution Reordering
While this terminology may be confusing to some, it results in huge real-world improvements to ray-traced graphics performance, a 2-3 time improvement in 3D apps like Blender, and a 25% boost to RTX gameplay.
All of this is coupled with DLSS 3.0, Nvidia’s latest generation of deep learning super sampling tech that utilizes Nvidia’s latest graphics card collection to the fullest extent. Basically, the highlight of this new tech is the ability to predict entire frames rather than just pixels via DLSS 2.0. The DLSS 3.0 in contrast processes the current and prior frame to get the data. This includes the direction and velocity of pixels and geometry of objects in a scene that feed into a neural network and generates intermediary frames.
Even when broken down, it may sound complex. But what it results in is a huge improvement in gameplay and performance. In fact, Nvidia showcased a new RTX Max mode in Cyberpunk 2077 during the event, with an average of 100fps+ using DLSS 3.0 tech. On top of that, Nvidia claims that gamers will see a 2x jump in frame rate in rasterized games and an impressive 4x performance jumps in titles that utilize ray-tracing technology.
