Finding Your Way Using a Compass and a Map

To start your journey, the first step is to find your direction correctly. Our professionally designed compass included in the survival kits can be used in combination with a map to help to find your direction correctly.

Step 1: Line up your points

To start with you need to know where you are on the map (point A) and where you want to go to (point B). Get the map flat – a stiff map case, flat rock, or your knee works. Line up points A and B with either the side of your compass or one of the black lines running down the base plate, making sure that the direction of the travel arrow is pointing in the direction you want to go in (so towards point B).
For the moment, don’t worry about the north arrow.

Step 2: Align to grid north

Now, hold the compass still and turn the compass housing bezel so that the “N” on the bezel and the orienteering arrow are point to the grid north (the top of the map). To help do this – make sure that the orienteering lines are lined up with the easting lines on the map. Try to get this as accurate as possible – and if you have folded your map check which way is north!
Again, ignore what the compass needle is doing at this stage.

Step 3: Adjust for magnetic variation

Now you need to allow for the difference between magnetic north and grid north. The adjustment varies across the country and you can generally find it printed on your map in the key. Look for ‘magnetic north’. Ignore any references to ‘true north’ as we don’t need them. At the moment GB magnetic variations are between -1° and 4°. Pick up your compass and turn your compass bezel anticlockwise to ADD the positive magnetic variations, or clockwise to SUBTRACT negative variations.
Many compasses have a smaller scale inside the compass housing to make this easier, or use the outer scale. Most compasses only show a marker for every 2 degrees. With such a small variation for GB, you can often ignore it, but it can become critical in some parts of the world or in featureless areas.

Step 4: Line yourself up

Now put the map away. Be careful you don’t move the compass bezel.
Hold the compass flat and near your body, with the big “direction of travel” arrow pointing straight ahead. Turn yourself and the compass around slowly until the red end of the needle lines up with the orienting arrow, as in the picture. The direction of the travel arrow should still point straight ahead – that’s the way you are going, towards B. Look up, and pick an object in the distance that’s in exactly the right direction. It could be a distinctive tree, rock, hill peak, or similar. Don’t use sheep, as they tend to move.

The biggest errors by beginners here are firstly moving the bezel – it’s set and should not be changed at this point. Secondly, not holding the compass pointing directly away from the body. Also, be aware of any magnets or metal near the compass: mobile phones, magnetic buttons, metal belts, and similar can “deflect” the compass needle, making it inaccurate. How to Build a Bow Saw to Cut the Wood?

After arriving at your destination with the compass included in the survival kits, one important thing that you need to do is to get enough woods for starting a fire or for building the shelter. You can use the wire saw to cut the wood directly. Or, you can build a bow saw with the wire saw.

Find a live, sturdy branch that you can cut off to a length of about two hand widths longer than the wire saw. Make sure the branch is not so thick that you can’t bend it, but not so thin that it doesn’t provide any tension.

Your tree branch will need to be a few inches longer than your wire saw with Ys on both sides. and smaller in diameter than your wire saw O-rings. (If you find that you want extra stability where the O-ring anchor into the branch, you can use your knife to notch out anchor points.) It will also be helpful if your tree branch is curved a bit… AND is able to be bent slightly without breaking. Use the survival knife included in the survival kit to trim up your branch.

Once you’ve cut your branch to length, hook one of the O-rings over an end, and place that end on the ground. Now bend the branch enough so that you can secure the second ring to the other end.

Your wire saw should now have a good deal of tension. (If not, you may want to start over.)

Begin cutting!

You’ll see how easily the bow saw now rips through the wood compared to when you were cutting with it wrapped around your hands. And, keep in mind that cutting too fast can cause the wire to heat up and break.

Step 1: Find a good location. You need to find a good location to build your Dakota Fire Hole. Any flat surface will work great for the making of the Dakota Fire Hole. Step 2: Dig the fire hole. The size and depth of the hole depending on how big you want your fire to be. Step 3: Dig the oxygen supply hole. When you have finished making the hole that the fire will be in, it is time to dig a second hole to supply the fire with oxygen. The second hole should be approximately a foot away from the fire hole; it doesn’t have to be as big as the fire-containing hole. If you dig the hole at an angle, it will be easier to connect the holes later because you will have a better position for digging the connection tunnel.

Now, scrap some small wood pieces with the scraper of the fire starter. Then start your fire by applying the scraper to the rod. Note that you need to first remove the black protection layer by scraping first several times.
